Five-Spice Slow Cooker Asian Pulled Pork

Updated: Jul 27, 2021

I absolutely love cooking (and eating!) asian food. I always make sure to have ingredients ready when I want to concoct a new creation. I had some pork shoulder in the house and wasn't sure what to do with it. So I threw these ingredients together, cooked it in my Crockpot and the result was magical! This pork is so flavorful and you won't want to stop eating it. The only ingredient I didn't have in the house was fresh ginger so I used powdered. But fresh is always best if you can get it. Eat this delicious pork over rice, noodles, or you can even make dumplings!

Here's how to make it:

Ingredients

  • 3 - 3 1/2 pounds pork (butt) shoulder

  • 2 TBS Chinese five-spice

  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce

  • 3 TBS low-sodium soy sauce

  • 3 TBS honey

  • 2 TBS cooking sherry

  • 3 TBS minced fresh ginger (or 1 TBS powdered)

  • 3 TBS minced garlic

  • sliced green onion, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cut the pork into 3"-4" chunks and score the fat with a knife.

  2. Season the pork chunks with five-spice powder and rub it in all over. Let it sit at room temp while you prepare the sauce.

  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the hoisin, soy sauce, honey, sherry, ginger, and garlic.

  4. Place the pork in the slow cooker. Try to get them all in one layer.

  5. Pour the sauce over the pork and, using tongs, roll the pork in the sauce, ensuring it's completely covered.

  6. Cook the pork on low for 8 hours (or on high for 4 hours, though I prefer low and slow for the best results).

  7. After 4 hours, turn the pork chunks over using tongs and continue cooking. I bet your house smells amazing right about now, right?!

  8. When it's done cooking, use tongs to remove the meat and place on a cutting board.

  9. Shred the pork. It should be so tender, you can shred it using the tongs. You can also use two large forks. Discard any bones or pieces of fat.

  10. Reserve the liquid, you'll want to pour this over your meat when you serve it! Or, you can put it back in the crockpot with the sauce and serve feom there. TIP: If you want a thicker sauce, put the liquid in a saucepan and cook over medium heat. Add in a mixture of 1 TBS each water and corn starch and stir until you have the desired consistency.

  11. Serve over rice or noodles, add some sauce and green onions and enjoy!
