There's something so comforting and satisfying about a good grilled cheese sandwich. But they can get kind of boring, right? So what if you add a little color to it? You have rainbow (or unicorn!) grilled cheese! It's a really fun activity to do with the kids, or even for adults - I had a blast! Make sure you use a good, sturdy bread like my Amish White Bread.
Here's how to make it:
Ingredients (for two sandwiches, adjust for more):
6-8 ounces shredded white cheese (American and mozzarella work great)
4 slices bread
Butter - for the bread and the pan
Food coloring - have fun here. Mix colors or use as is. I prefer to use natural food coloring.
Instructions
Get 4 small bowls ready and add a handful of the shredded cheese to each.
Add several drops of food coloring to each bowl - the amount of coloring you'll need may vary. Start with a few and add more if needed.
Mix the cheese/coloring mixture with a fork until the cheese is fully colored.
Butter one side of each slice of bread.
On the unbuttered side, on one slice only, add the cheese next to each other in bunches, Be careful not to put similar colors (blue/green) next to each other or they may blend.
Heat a frying pan on medium with about 1 TBS of butter. Once it's heated and the butter is melted, place the bread with the cheese on it butter side down onto the pan and put the second slice on top. Use a spatula to smoosh it down to help melt the cheese, but be careful not to burn the bread. Check it using the spatula and when the bread is golden brown, carefully flip it over.
Keep cooking until the cheese it melted and the bread is a beautiful golden brown.
Slice diagonally and enjoy the colorful cheese pull!
